We have reached the 12th day of Christmas! Today is Epiphany, or Three Kings Day. Here in Germany this day is set aside to remember the Magi who came to worship Jesus and bring him gifts. The magi followed the star and crossed a great distance. Most people believe it took them about three years to reach Jesus. When I was researching this project I actually read a site that said they got there twelve days after he was born. I'm more apt to believe the three years theory, but I guess it depends on how far from the east they came... Anyway... While we don't know how many Magi came, we are told about three particular gifts they brought. Gold, incense, and myrrh. Gold was to declare his kingship. Incense to declare his Lordship. And myrrh was a burial oil which indicated that they were in the know about his future as a sacrifice. Smart guys. They knew THAT baby was the world's Messiah.

Anyway, since I live in Germany I thought you all might enjoy a German nutcracker drummer. There's only the one, but he's really cool!

So what about the number twelve? Well, according to the research the twelve helps us remember the Apostle's Creed. Well, I'm Christian but not Catholic, so this one was completely new to me. I'll post it for you here, but I don't have any insights to share with you about it. I think it's kind of self-explanatory.

The twelve points of doctrine in the Apostles' Creed 1: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. 2: I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. 3: He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. 4: He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell [the grave]. 5: On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. 6: He will come again to judge the living and the dead. 7: I believe in the Holy Spirit, 8: the holy catholic Church, 9: the communion of saints, 10: the forgiveness of sins, 11: the resurrection of the body, 12: and life everlasting.

Well, it feels kind of funny to be closing this one today. It's been a great adventure and I've enjoyed sharing some of myself along with the graphics. Thanks for sticking with me on our journey through the 12 Days of Christmas!

Wow, only one day left! Thanks for staying with me through eleven days of one of the most mysterious songs of all time! For today's download I wasn't sure what kind of pipe the song meant for the piper to be piping. I did some quick google searches and most graphics had the pipers playing a flute like instrument. That was ok, but I kind of got the urge to make some bagpipes. So the download contains one flute player and one bagpipe player. You can use the one you like and duplicate him eleven times if you really want eleven pipers on your layout for some reason! Hehe. I'm hoping maybe someone out there has traveled or lives in Scotland and finds this guy useful!

So what does eleven mean in the song? Well, the research says that eleven stands for the eleven faithful disciples who were left after Judas killed himself. That could be. My only problem with that theory is that the eleven disciples replaced Judas with Matthias in Acts 1, but I guess it's still a valid theory. So, minus Judas, the eleven remaining disciples were Simon who was called Peter, Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, John his brother; Phillip and Bartholomew; Thomas; Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus; Thaddaeus; and Simon the Cananaean.

The Lords a leaping turned out to be surprisingly difficult. Why would a Lord be leaping? What would he look like as he lept? Would he be holding a top hat and an umbrella? What kind of jump would it be? Is it a dignified leap? I know... silly questions! In the end I decided since yesterday's ladies were ballerinas that they should have a male dancer to accompany them. Well, that was easier said than done because I had a little trouble finding photos of male dancers jumping in the right kind of position. Most of the photos had them lifting girls in the air, etc. So... today's download has the guy in only one leaping pose, but a few color variations to spice it up. I hope you can find him useful. If for some reason you need a male ballet dancer and you would like him in a different leap you can send me a photo of a real male ballet dancer (no one else's graphic please) and I will make a different pose. I will only do this for free as long as the downloads are free - until 10 Jan 2011.

Ok, on to the good stuff. Ten fingers, ten toes, base ten ... since I've been living in Germany I have decided that the US and the United Kingdom should go ahead and adopt metric as their system. Base ten is SO much easier! Do you think God was thinking something similar when he gave out the commandments - one commandment per finger, right? Easy to remember! Easy to remember, but harder than you might think to keep... Let's look at them:

Exodus 20:3-

You shall have no other gods before me.

You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.

You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.

Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.

You shall not murder.

You shall not commit adultery.

You shall not steal.

You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor's.

Wow, what a list. We look at it and think, easy peasy. You may even think you're doing pretty good by this list. But God gave the law to show us how much we need a saviour. How we can't do it alone. Some of the really pious Jews thought they had it all together because they could follow all these plus the extra ones they added to the list (after the religious leaders finished with it there were 613 commandments!). But then Jesus came on the scene and said that not only did they have to obey them on the outside, but in their HEADS and their HEARTS too! And for the right reasons! Talk about raising the bar. So it's not enough to refrain from killing your boss. You can't fantasize about it either! How can we ever live up? Well, there is GOOD NEWS! Jesus came to free us from the punishment of the law! That doesn't mean we can go around breaking the law, it just means that through his sacrifice we don't have to be cut off from God if we miss a step. I could keep going about the significance and meanings and more... but I don't want to lose all my readers! Nine represents the fruits of the spirit, found in Galatians 5:22, which are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. The fruits are a result of our passion for God and following Jesus. And unlike the spiritual gifts, we're expected to have ALL the fruits of the spirit, not just some of them. Just like an apple tree is expected to bear apples, our lives are expected to be defined by these characteristics. Ok, so I might be crazy, but this download actually has eight maids and one cow! I couldn't help myself! They were just so stinkin cute, and I HAD to have a cow! So has anyone started trying to figure out what the days represent? Can you guess what there are eight of? If you said eight Beatitudes give yourself a cookie! The Beatitudes are known as the "Blessed are" passage, or attitudes you should have as a follower of Jesus. These were taught directly from Jesus during the sermon on the mount, found in Matthew 5:3-12. I'm going to take the liberty of typing out the entire passage, because I think it's worth reading the whole thing. There's the attitude, and then why it's blessed. So I want to share this one in its entirety.

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you."

Be encouraged! Some of these don't seem like emotions you want to feel, but Jesus gives us hope for how we will overcome hardships. Whew! Last day of birds! I gotta say though, I really loved making the swans! I think they are one of the most majestic creatures on Earth! I was having trouble with the white felt again so I went looking for a felt style to buy, and I came across an AWESOME one! If you are a designer and need a good felt action, check this one out. So, why did my true love give seven swans? I'll let you in on a little secret. My favorite number is seven. If I am ever asked to pick a number between 1 and 10, the first number I'll pick is seven. In Christian numerology the number seven represents God's perfection, or spiritual completeness. In the 12 Days of Christmas research, seven swans represent the seven spiritual gifts that are listed in Romans 12. They are prophecy, ministry, teaching, exhortation, giving, leadership, and compassion.

(1 Corinthians 12 has a list of gifts too. They are similar but are listed as wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miracles, prophecy, discernment, speaking in tongues and interpretation of tongues.)

The point in both passages is that God gives different gifts to each believer and that it is our different gifts that make the body of Christ complete. If we all had the same gift we would miss out. And because they are all necessary none are more important than any other, even though we sometimes like to think so. So by being part of a body of believers and by exercising your gift, you help make the body complete as the number seven represents. Pretty exciting stuff right?!?

Inspirational Swans

Check out this amazing picture of a mother and her baby swans! How sweet! Making birds for each of the first seven days of the song has really improved my Adobe Illustrator skills! I've been working with photos of the actual birds and creating vector graphics from them. Then adding styles to make them look like felt pieces. For day two I had trouble with the white so I cute the dove out of actual felt and photographed it. But the rest have been made in Illustrator. Thanks for all your kind and encouraging comments! I'm really glad you're enjoying the posts! :)

In Genesis 1 it says that God created everything about our planet and He said it was good. Then He made us, and He said it was very good. Some scholars believe that when it says "God said..." that actually the word in Hebrew would be better translated "God SANG..." I think that's beautiful. As an artist I find this to be one of the most exciting qualities of God. Anyway, He took six days to complete His creation and that could be what the "six geese a laying" represent on day six - the birth of our planet. Find your download on 4shared or Box. In our journey through the song, the five golden rings stand for the first five books of the Old Testament, known as the Torah or the Pentateuch. Did you know that the early Jews had to memorize the entire five books? Before it was available to every individual in print, audio, or as an iPhone app it was shared orally and memorized. The first five books are Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. They present the early history of the faith, the old covenant, and the whole reason we need Jesus! According to a few websites the modern version of the fourth day that says "calling birds" might have been mistranslated from "colly birds," which is an old English nickname for a blackbird. That could be, since I can think of at least one other rhyme that refers to blackbirds. Well, some believe that the difference between calling and colly might debunk the Christian theory of the song. The theory being if it's calling birds it represents the four gospels. I don't know why colly birds would force it to NOT represent them though... I mean if French hens can represent faith, hope, and love, why can't blackbirds represent the gospels? I think it's more about the number. Well, anyway, the four gospels are the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, and they all tell the story of Jesus' life, death, and resurrection, from four different points of view.

Here's yesterday's French hens. You may have noticed from yesterday's turtle dove that there was only one dove in the zip. I hope you will understand that sometimes I will only include the graphic once and you can duplicate it how ever many times needed. That won't be the case for every file, but if there are no major differences needed I'll only include it once. So for this download there is one hen, and you can "clone" her to make three. Get it? Clone? Hehe. :)

So what do the three French Hens represent? Well, according to this tradition we're looking at, the three French Hens represent the three virtues of Faith, Hope, and Love from 1 Corinthians 13:13. But I wonder if they could also represent the trinity: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

So I think it must be a 4shared problem based on how you are describing what's happening. So I would ask that you keep trying, and maybe give me a suggestion of what download sites you have had the best luck with. Maybe I need to have another option... I'm so glad that you all are excited to get the downloads and hear what the strange lyrics may represent! I wanted to remind you that no one knows exactly what the song's origins are, so the meanings I'm listing here are just one theory. But it's the theory I liked the most and it's my blog! :)

So according to this tradition, the two turtle doves represent the two testaments that the Bible is broken into. The first being the old covenant with Abraham, and the second being the new covenant with Jesus the Messiah.

In Germany families put up their Christmas decorations a few days before Christmas and then leave them up until 3 Kings Day, or Epiphany. The song "The 12 Days of Christmas" refer to the time between Christmas and Epiphany.

I was doing some research to see when the days start (on the 25th or 26th) and I found a website with a discussion about what each of the days in the song means. According to Catholic tradition the song was a mnemonic device to teach the catechism to kids. While the meanings proposed by tradition may not be the real origin of the song, I really loved the ideas and wanted to share each day with you here. So, there will be a freebie each day representing the "gift" given on that day and a Christian explanation of that day.

So... A partridge in a pear tree refers to Jesus the Messiah being the ultimate gift and a protector of His people. The scripture reference to support this theory is Luke 13:34, "Jerusalem! Jerusalem! How often would I have sheltered you under my wings, as a hen does her chicks, but you would not have it so . . . ."

Tutorial - Making a Repeating Pattern

I've been thoroughly enjoying learning the ins and outs of Adobe Illustrator these last few months, and the other day it dawned on me how to make a perfect repeating pattern! Of course I'm sure this has dawned on MANY designers already, but for those of you who may be beginners, I decided to write it up as a tutorial. This tutorial uses Adobe Illustrator, but I believe the principals are the same in Photoshop.

1. Choose the size of the repeat

Set up your document for the size you want the pattern. For this example the repeat is six inches, square, so that's how large the new document is. Turn on the grids and the rulers to help you line things up.

2. Create the pattern elements

Here I've created a simple "rose" from a circle and curves.

3. Size and Duplicate

Rotate and size the element before you duplicate it. That's important! Duplicate the element. You can go ahead and make a third copy now and move it over to the side if you will be using this same element again.

4. Line up on the Axis

Line up the first element on the bottom left axis (x: 0; y: 0)

5. Line up the second element

For this example we are doing the repeat on the left and right edges. So the second element goes on the right axis (x: 6; y: 0). If you are making the elements to go on the top and bottom edges then you would use the top left axis (x: 0; y: 6).

6. Group the Elements

7. Place them on the edge

Once they are grouped they are free to move around the edge. They will move together and wherever you let them rest they will make a perfect join when you save the pattern later.

8. Fill in the gaps!

Continue working the edges of the pattern and filling in the spaces in between. Be sure that if you place something on the edge it has the perfect match on the other side!

9. Save and create pattern

I save the pattern as a .png file to create an overlay later. If you use save for web mode make sure you change the image size! The default is pretty small. For this 6 inch pattern I save it at 1200 x 1200 pixels. Then I opened the pattern in Photoshop Elements, defined pattern (Edit, define pattern) then created a 12" paper and filled a layer with the pattern. Add texture, color, styles, etc. to create the design.

So much fun! This really makes a difference for me being comfortable making repeating patterns! I hope it helps you! If you found the tutorial useful please leave a comment, and better yet leave a link to something you made using the technique! Happy scrapping!

For some inspiration I created this layered flower sample:

I used four different flower mats. Each has a solid fill except for the third mat, which is a cardboard box layer style. The little wire coils were made with one of the accent lines and a chrome style. I put a crinkled paper overlay over the whole flower then used the burn tool to accent the crinkles, add strategic shadowing, and darken the edges of the petals. Then I added the button center and merged the whole flower.

These templates are so fun to use! Just let your creativity run wild and see what you come up with! I would love to see what you do!

Memorial Day Mini Kit

No matter how you feel about the current military situation or what the state of your patriotism is, you can still take time to remember what Memorial Day is for: remembering those who died to protect us.

I was really moved yesterday when my kids and I bought some poppies from a group of veterans. I'm used to being around veterans, in fact many of them now work with us in the civilian sector. And I know from friends of retirees that sometimes veterans are a little bit forgotten. When the man handed me the flower he said "Thanks for supporting us." In that moment I felt really humbled. I kind of stammered and said, "Thank YOU for supporting US." It sounded so stupid but it was all I could muster.

This kit is a small tribute to those who have fought to protect human life and the right to freedom. I've been in Digiridooscraps for about a month now, but it's all been setting up and getting started. This is a brand new site and the grand opening is the first weekend in June. There will be tons of fun activities going on, plus we've all contributed to a really nice collaboration kit, which is what this ad was made out of.

Debuting Closet Confessions

My much labored over "Closet Confessions" kit is finally finished! This kit began as a simple idea based on my friend Kara's wardrobe, but has morphed into something bigger and much more fabulous! The one kit kept growing and growing until it exploded into four mini kits and some add-ons.

Here's a preview of the Mega Kit. Not all the elements would fit in the preview, but they are mostly represented.

Closet Confessions Mega Kit

If you're not ready for the Mega Kit, get your teeth wet with one of these Mini Kits.

Kara's Closet

My favorite outfit of Kara's is a red and white striped shirt, green cardigan, eggplant skirt and mustard tights. And that's where the color palette began. The carousel horse was inspired by her sister's paintings.

This kit includes four patterned papers, one intricately cut piece of felt, brads, buttons, and ribbon, one bronze butterfly, one carousel horse, flower and leaf, one journalling spot, one staple, and one swirl.

Hannah's Hose

My friend Hannah has the most interesting pairs of tights. I've never seen a collection quite like them. She also has a very bohemian style, complete with feather headbands and cowboy boots!

In this kit you will find coordinating papers, brads, one button, one bronze beetle, feathers, one flower and leaves, one vintage key and ribbon tags, belly dancing coins, one curled ribbon, and one staple.

Jenny's Jewels

Several of my co-workers make beautful jewelry, and I have left a lot of my paycheck behind enouraging their craft! Jenny has a very eclectic, vintage style in both her jewelry designs and her fashion choices.

In this kit you will find five patterned papers, one bronze bookplate and two brads, two big buttons and a stitch, one really cool fabric yoyo, "stained glass" swirls element, one rose, one journal spot, one key, one staple, and ribbons.

Jennifer's Jammies

When I think of my friend Jennifer I think of polka dots, polka dots, and polka dots! Jennifer is a seamstress and has made some of the most adorable clothes and costumes for herself, her kids, and sometimes me!

In this kit you'll find five patterned papers, one bookplate, brads, and buttons, one crocheted flower, leaves, one vintage hanger, one staple, one stitched swirl, ribbon tags, and one giant piece of ric rac.

I've been really busy in my "real life" organizing an art contest that we put on every year. If you're interested in my "real job" you can read about it here. I've also been designing for several upcoming collections.

I just finished up my portion of the June Collaboration from Ahhh Scrap and I'm REALLY excited about my part. The theme is Summer Wedding and the colors are really fun! It's a surprise, so I'll have to leave you hanging. But you can still pick up the May Collaboration from here.

And now I'm working on two fun collaborations over at Digi_ridoo Scraps. The GRAND OPENING will be June 5th and there is going to be TONS of fun on the forum! I know Earth Day is over, but we should be taking care of our environment every day! And with digital scrapbooking, you are! I love this kit. And there's enough cool stuff in it you can use it for any kind of layout. You can snag it from here or here.

My favorite part is this totally amazing dove.

The design is from the amazingly talented Insanely-Crafty. She designed several beautiful felt projects. This bird is from one she made and sent to her mom. It is SO gorgeous! My digi counterpart is not as beautiful as the real thing, but it still makes a great addition to this kit!

"For this week’s challenge, I want you to create your very own Best and Worst award list. The topic can be anything you want: best and worst movies, vacations, things about being a parent…feel free to get creative! The only requirement is that you include YOUR perspective. If you’d like to get someone else’s perspective to compare, I’m totally for that but this page is first and foremost about you."

Dare Flair:

• You must include at least 10 items in your list: 5 Bests and 5 Worsts. • Each of the 10 answers must be contained within it’s own separate space - think journaling blocks, strips, charts…get creative! • You must include at least one warm color (reds, oranges, yellows), one cool color (blues, greens, purples) and one neutral (black, white, kraft) on your page.

Well, it's not the most exciting page I've ever made, but I think it gets the point across. When I was thinking about Earth Day I was trying to think of all the things we do well and not so well in reference to taking care of the environment. We try pretty hard.

The elements in this kit are partially from the mini kit, partially from the full kit (that I haven't finished yet) and partly from other random places. I realized when making this that I really need to work on journal spots. I haven't made many of my own yet.

Happy Earth Day!

Living in Germany has made me so much more aware of environmental concerns. Here we are required by law to recycle, and the whole country is obsessed with conservation and taking care of the land. You aren't even supposed to wash your car with soap in your driveway! I really like this eco-savvy culture.

So how is digi-scrapping an eco-solution? Hello! Save a tree, go digi! Digital scrapbooking uses less paper, has no waste, is reusable, and has no danger to the environment. Well, if you're worried about the amount of energy your computer is using, just remember to turn off the monitor when you aren't using it and put a plant next to it to absorb the CO2. :)

One of my co-designers at DigiScrapShop also got inspired to make an Earth Day mini freebie! I think her "word art" paper is really cool! And notice, we both used the same earth as an embellishment!

Summersault is my latest kit uploaded to the store. I had so much fun making this kit. The color palette is so soft and sweet! I also got to use my tablet a lot for the doodly floral bits. And the wood objects are made using overlays I made from all the wood objects all over my house. Actually, a lot of the objects in this kit are things I took pictures of!
